This ancient city of more than 300 hectares was founded around the year 540 AD by Mayan tribes who came from the south. Many of the structures at Chichén Itzá are reminiscent of those of the Toltecs or Maya-Toltecs, but the buildings at Chichén Itzá are larger and more abundant. Much of Chichén Itzá’s architecture is in a distinctive style: its columns with warriors, its reclining figures called “chacmools” and its serpentine palisades. Cutouts of ball players sacrificing their defeated enemies flank the interior walls of the great Ball Court, the largest in all of Mesoamerica. The Castle’s 365 steps suggest that the building functioned as a giant chronographic milestone, and on the days of the equinox the sun casts a serpentine shadow on the north stair.
